the meeting of the union of lebanese democratic youth with the cypriot delegation edon during their visit to lebanon

2021

The Union of Lebanese Democratic Youth will be hosting a delegation from the The United Democratic Youth Organisation (EDON) Cyprus for a journey starting from July 23 till the  26 of July, during which the two organizations will discuss the situation in Cyprus and Lebanon, as the crises of youth in the world are inseparable from each other, even though the borders are separated.

Because the borders are illusory concepts, and we believe in the internationalism of our struggles facing imperialism . the two organisations discussed the possibility of cooperation between them against their common enemy, aiming to change the current situation in the world and the two countries.

the speech of the executive office of the lebanese democratic youth union for the cypriot delegegation edon during his visit to lebanon

We welcome you, comrades in Lebanon, to the Headquarter of the Lebanese Democratic Youth Union. We renew our thanks to you for your solidarity with us during the explosion of the Beirut port, this humanitarian catastrophe that befell us. We always look with confidence in partnership and solidarity between peoples, especially in difficult times.

This explosion killed more than 200 people, injured and disabled thousands, and destroyed half of the capital and the country's main port.

Tomorrow morning, we will take a field tour together with you to the port and its neighboring area as well as the squares that witnessed the uprising of October 17, 2019, which formed a political hinge in the history of Lebanon in order to change the regime and build a state of social justice.

Beginning with the general Lebanese situation, since the end of the civil war in 1975, Lebanon entered a phase of international settlements that ended the project of the leftist movement in building a state of social justice, in addition to consolidating the Syrian guardianship through its army , and to the Israeli enemy's occupation of the south and the Lebanese Bekaa until the year 2000, the liberation came through to the Lebanese resistance.

The existing authority is based on sectarianism in order to divide society horizontally amid a dependent neoliberal capitalist economic model. The political system is built on the basis of sectarian consensus, which creates a fundamental problem in renewing its legitimacy every period of time. These foreign powers turn to him when the regime is disrupted. France, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and the United States are the official sponsors of the corruption of the Lebanese system.

The existing sectarian system that nullifies the foundations of citizenship and the logic of the state's duty to secure services and rights to the Lebanese people, in a parallel to the model, is that a group of businessmen benefit from corruption, clienteles, and the division of state resources derived from people's taxes.

Built during 30 years, is a rentier economy based on the banking sector that does not produce anything but imports everything we need, which led to the accumulation of wealth among the 1% and a continuous decline of the middle and poor classes. The crisis erupted in 2019 at a time when the wealthy smuggled their money abroad, leaving the community to its fate. Today we suffer from crises of medicine, fuel and electricity, that cuts off for about 20 hours a day, except for the collapse of the exchange value of the Lebanese pound at an average percentage of 400%

The Lebanese authorities do not undertake any repair , They’re unable to form a government as a result of their differences. The situation of residents in Lebanon is deteriorating daily.

We, as the Lebanese Democratic Youth Union as a secular leftist organization, see that this system is unable to continue, so we do not seek to reform it, but only to change it and build a new state model based on secularization, democracy and social justice, including the right to housing, transportation, education and freedom of expression.

It is necessary to move from the rentier model to a productive economy, to break with the imperialist West in compliance with the IMF and the World Bank, to cancel the unjust internal and external debts, and to burden banks and businessmen with the price of the collapse, not for the poor classes, in conjunction with immediate provision of education and free medical care to protect society and secure the future.

The Lebanese youth today suffer from unemployment and the collapse of the value of their salaries. Students suffer from the low ability of the official university to secure academic continuity, especially during the Corona pandemic, which imposed virtual education without the availability of  Internet and electricity.

Today, there must be a popular democratic process that contributes to restructuring the authority on new foundations based on the rights of the Lebanese people, or we will face some difficult choices such as chaos or futile wars...

Today we look forward with you to know the political situation in Cyprus, especially that you have gone through a difficult economic experience in the past, which may be similar to what we are going through, interested in knowing the latest developments regarding the Turkish occupation of a part of Cyprus and their impact on the vital economic term associated with oil exploration.
